![]() Did you set out to ensure you had a deaf character in this universe, or how did that come about?ĭevon Giehl: We knew we wanted an aunt for Callum and Ezran who was in the military, and we wanted her to come back mid-season and be someone who could actually stand up to Viren. Polygon: The Dragon Prince team has spoken about the importance of building an inclusive fantasy world. Polygon spoke to two of the show’s senior writers, Devon Giehl and Iain Hendry, about creating Amaya and Gren, how it feels to watch the reaction to your work in real time, and what they hope comes next for the series. (Although Gren might choose to politely interpret it as “bull droppings.”) She’s as fiercely loyal to her kingdom and her family when Viren attempts to claim the throne for himself under the guise of devotion to Katolis, she calls bullshit. Above all else, she’s King Harrow’s most trusted ally: the woman he tasks with both protecting the princes and holding the line at the Breach. Her appearance in the new Netflix series, created by one of the head writers of Avatar: The Last Airbender, marks an unprecedented step forward for a genre that’s historically had very little representation of people with disabilities, and she’s been met with an outpouring of love from fans-many of them deaf or hard of hearing (HoH) themselves.Īmaya’s deafness is integral to who she is and how she engages with the world - she signs back and forth with Prince Callum, the protagonist, and in most scenes, she’s accompanied by her faithful interpreter, Commander Gren - but it’s by no means her defining trait. She’s also a deaf woman of color who uses American Sign Language to communicate. Amaya would have to dodge, strike at Vi's joints or head, and have a lot of luck to win.The Dragon Prince’s General Amaya is powerful, forthright and funny. If they both have their full kit, Vi has a strong advantage in raw power. I don't believe Vi is ever seen wearing armor, in Arcane or in the game, but if she were to put some on I think it would slow her down because she's not used to it. If Amaya is armored (but still unarmed), that gives her a defensive edge - as a knight, she'd be used to fighting in armor. Vi is more savage and possibly stronger, but Amaya has better technique and more experience. I think if they're both unarmed and wearing normal clothes, it could go either way. However, Amaya is often seen winning fights using punches and throws, even against a fully armed Janai, who is said to be the best fighter among the Sun Elves. Knights would typically learn some unarmed fighting techniques as a backup, in case they lost their main weapons, but didn't necessarily specialize in it. Around 15 she would become a squire and begin advanced training in a variety of weapons, and accompany her patron into real battles. She's obviously good at street fighting, but that doesn't automatically make her the best fighter ever.Īssuming Amaya's training was similar to real-world knights, she would have started basic archery, sword fighting, and horseback riding around 8 years old. Vi didn't have formal training, she went out and got into fights a lot. Think you've been wrongfully banned from our Discord server and want to prove it?
